A common cause of foot pain is a stress fracture, which is a hairline crack in the bone. It is generally thought of as an overuse injury, and it is particularly common among runners and other athletes involved in high-impact sports. Another cause is doing too much, too soon when your body is not in shape. Poor or incorrect training habits may also lead to the development of stress fractures. In addition, footwear that lacks proper cushioning and arch support may be a factor. Gradual pain during weight-bearing activity is a sign of a stress fracture. This discomfort usually subsides after resting the foot or ceasing the activity. For that reason, a stress fracture may easily go unnoticed. Other symptoms include swelling on the top of the foot, tenderness to touch, and in some cases, bruising. Further, a stress fracture may cause sharp pain when taking a step. It can take up to two months for a stress fracture to heal. During that time it is thought wise to switch to non-weight-bearing activities, such as swimming, for exercise. For help with stress fractures of the foot, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists from Ankle & Foot Care Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

Why Are My Feet Swollen?

Excess fluid in the body may result in having swollen feet. The medical term is oedema, which can happen for various reasons. Pregnant women are all too familiar with having swollen ankles, in addition to people who are overweight. Taking specific types of medication may produce swollen feet, such as hormone therapy, antidepressants, or blood pressure pills. An injury that happens to the feet may cause the ankles to swell, in addition to having existing kidney, liver or heart conditions. Mild relief may be found when salty foods are reduced from daily eating, a gentle exercise program is started, and the feet are frequently elevated. If you have swollen feet or ankles, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Ankle & Foot Care Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

Pediatric Flat Feet

When babies are born, their feet are flat. This means that if you were to place the soles of their feet on the floor, they would be flush with the floor. As the child ages, an arch typically develops. This generally happens by the time they are a teenager. If the arch does not develop, they would continue to have flat feet. While not deemed serious, flat feet can cause discomfort and can make doing everyday activities requiring prolonged standing difficult. Children are active and often play sports, which can cause cramping in the arch and heel areas. Well-fitting and supportive shoes, as well as shoe inserts or orthotics, can provide some relief for flat feet. Rarely will surgery be recommended. If your child has flat feet and they feel pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist to learn about options for relief.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Ankle & Foot Care Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Possible Reasons for Ankle Pain

The ankle is a complex joint. It is made up of bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It is connected to two bones in the lower leg called the tibia and fibula at the ankle joint or talus. The tibia is the shinbone, and the fibula is the lower leg bone. Ligaments and tendons connect the talus to the heel and other foot bones. There are also blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues in the ankle area, which can be impacted by different diseases. Ankle pain is a symptom often felt by active people and athletes. However, all people may experience ankle pain. Reasons for such pain vary. It is important to understand its root cause to be treated properly. Ankle pain is unlikely to be a result of a bone fracture. Such pain can be associated with edema or leg swelling, nerve-related issues, arthritis, or a sprain, strain, or tendonitis. If you are suffering from ankle pain that does not resolve itself with rest or worsens, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for a proper evaluation and treatment plan.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists  from Ankle & Foot Care Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.
